| September 14, 2008 -- A weekend of torrential rain critically impacted the Livingston County Chapter of the American Red Cross as rising flood waters filled the lower level of the parking lot. The Livingston County Drain Commission quickly responded along with Howell City workers to seek the source of the problem. Despite two pumps continually running to drain off the water the levels continued to rise. At its peak the water was rising a foot every half an hour. Unfortunately, they were unable to save the disaster supplies from the lower level and significant damage occurred to the building structure. Volunteers from throughout the community stopped by to offer assistance.
The chapter temporarily relocated to the Brighton Fire Department but returned to the chapter office on Grand River on September 17th.
Damage estimates for the building are expected to top $300,000, not including the materials lost in the flood. Insurance will cover the building damage except for our $2,500 deductible. All of the chapter’s disaster supplies, except for what was located in the Emergency Response Vehicle, were destroyed as well as Health and Safety supplies and other records.
We would like to express our grateful appreciation to all who volunteered to help especially the Livingston County Firefighters, Red Cross volunteers, and others who were in over chest deep water and working in adverse conditions throughout the day. |
